Have you ever woken up in the morning and wondered what it would be like to lay your head on train tracks and get your hear run over by 11 train cars? No? Well, you're about to find out. ORIGIN aren't new to the game. No, in fact, they are technical death metal vets. And being vets they suffer from "Old Dog" syndrome. Can they be taught new tricks? Even with their diehard following and constant penchant for pushig the boundaries of speed, many are beginning to wonder, is speed and technical precision all they have. In other words, where's the metal beef?! 2009's landmark "ANTITHESIS" catapulted them into the big fish in a little toxic pond category with better production values and an unrivaled tightness. Hell, I had a great dislike for them prior to that album. But even with that metal gem, the questions still lingered. ORIGIN's response?
The album doesnt start, it stabs open your face with a lightspeed lead in the form of the aptly titled "Explusion of Fury" and promptly descended into a maelstrum of brutality. Next we journey into "Purgatory", it's starts out with a midpaced intro and than....in comes enough speed to make The Flash jealous before switching courses again into a staggerstep riff. Don't blink or you'll miss the beginning of "Conceiving Death", a midpaced charger that plods steadily before some intense syncopation and, wait, is that a black metal riff?! You got tech death in my black metal peanut butter! Fuck, new tricks indeed. "Swarm" brings things back to form, intricracy and blazing speed. Next, "Saligia" bashes you in the face with more velocity and some sick mini leads before warping into intense tech groove, returning the band to it's roots abit. There's even a "slow" section! "The Descent" is your moment to pause, take a breather. Dark and brooding, it offers a much needed lull in the sea of aggression. "Fornever" returns to the land of syncopation and inhuman vocal patterns. "Committed" wins the album award for "least radio friendly song". Not because of speed but because of metal's love for high pitched squeally notes andhd introduction of low end pig squeals. "Banishing Illusion" trades in tech death for some straight up grindcore after a sweet lead. "Consequence of Solution" is epic amalgum of time changes and effects, alone showing not just growth but variety. Finally, the closer, "Evolution of Extinction" closes the album in true ORIGIN fashion: pretty damn fast, tech as fuck but with a headbanging groove riff that will stay in your head for hours. Unless your cranium is completely compacted.
Productionwise? You will never believe that this monolith of sound comes from three mortal men! Every instrument is present, crushing and played to the goddamn fullest extent . And these fuckers must gargle with broken glass shards before doing vocals. Screams, growls, gutturals are all present. Lyrically, this album is across the board: apocalypse, hive mentally devourment, issues of morality. Little bit of everything for everyone. Album art is dark and epic, and once again, space themed. What the fuck is with these dudes and space art?! You know what, it looks cool and somehow fits the gargantuan scope of the album.
5 albums in and ORIGIN seems quite intent on constant evolution. New tricks or old tricks, this dog has it all.
